HP Receives Favourable Ruling on Patent Infringements
HP follows in Epson's footsteps and is awarded a favourable ruling from US international Trade Commission on the sale and importation of inkjet printer cartridges that infring on its patents.
Like Epson HP lodged a complaint last June with the ITC with the aim to ban imports of ink cartridges that they said infringed on their patents.
The ITC decided that Microjet Technology co. directly violated HP's patents and that Asia Pacific Microsystems attributed to that infringement.
This may affect those looking for cheap ink cartridges for their HP printers as it may well pave the way for HP to agressively pursue and prevent 3rd party companies from producing cartridge compatible with their printers.

The HP Envy 100 printer
Users of HP ink cartridges may be interested to know of a new edition to their Envy line. HP customers may already be familiar with the Envy brand in terms of the sleek range of laptops, now HP have added a printer to this design orientated range - the HP Envy 100
Its sleek looks will certainly see it fitting better into the home than traditional inkjet printers but HP have perhaps forfeited functionality & performance in favour of looks and design. This printer does however feature a range of apps and HP's airprint facility allows users of all things Apple, inlcuding the ipad and iphone to print directly to the Envy 100.
HP have also opted for a 2 cartridge system, rather than a more economical 5 or 6 cartridge print engine. However the printer takes the HP 300 and HP 300XL range of cartridges, which are towards the more reasonable end of the scale for HP consumables and Jettec are now producing the HP 300XL remanufactured cartridges which can be purchased for around the more pocket friendly £16 for the black.

Trouble could be on the horizon for users of Compatible Epson Cartridges
There's news today that Epson has started proccedings in the High Court against Dynamic Cassette International Ltd, the people behind JetTec cartridges for alleged infringements to Epson's patents surrounding inkjet cartridges.
Epson have been aggressive in following up alleged patent issues, in a bid to protect its lucrative cartridge sales within the inkjet market and to scare off potential 3rd party companies from producing compatible Epson cartridges to fit their printers.
The company spent three years persuing Medea Ltd who distribute cartridges under the Inkrite brand, between 2007 and 2010, which resulted in an out of court settlement and Medea withdrawing their compatible Epson products under the Inkrite and JR Inkjet brands.

Don't be seduced by cheap printer prices only to pay later...
It's easy to be enticed by printers being sold at cheap prices but make sure you don't end up paying for it several times over when it comes to replacing the cartridges.
It's a failry well known trick of printer manufacturers to sell printers a cost or below, only to inflate the costs of their ink cartridges to boost profits.
Let me explain further.
Espons recent printer releases in the Stylus and Stylus office range have been produced to accept the T1285 and T1295 range of cartidges.
If you compare the these two different ranges of cartridges on capacity, the T1285 series are filled with just 5.9ml ink in the Black cartridge and a shocking 3.5ml of ink in each of the 3 Colours!! You get more in a sample size nail varnish bottle!
The T1295 series are a little better containing 11.2ml Black and 7ml in each of the Colours.
Out of the range of the range of printers which accept these cartridges the cheapest are the Stylus S22 and the Stylus SX125 starting at around £29.99-£39.99. Very tempting... but which cartridges do you think these printers will ONLY take?
Yes, thats right the T1285's!
If you purchased the SX420W, SX425W or the Sylus Office BX305FW there is some good news, as these will accept both T1285's and T1295's
Luckily our epson T1295 compatible cartridges and epson T1285 compatible cartridges are filled with nearly double the amounts of ink compared with the Genuine Epson sets
The table below shows the Epson Printers which accept the T1295 range of cartridges
So next time you think about replacing your printer and the price seems too good to pass up - it probably is! Just make sure you research your cartridges....

OKI goes a shade Greener
People who use OKI printer toners, or are thinking of purchasing a new laser printer may be interested in the company's new greener initiatives.
OKI Data Corporation, the Japanese provider of printing solutions have announced that as of next month, they will be using plant based bio plastics in the manufacturing of their printers and multifunction units.
This is good news for the environment since these bio plastics are biodegradable and produced from the renewable plant based resource - polyactic acid, reducing CO2 emissions and petroleum resources consumed.
As part of its green initiative, OKI who sell 1.1million printers and MFP's annually, have set a goal to reduce their emissions by 2012 by 6% compared to levels in 2007.
OKI have been considering the use of bio plastics in the manufacture of their printers for some time but have not until now due to the challenges they pose concerning flame resistance, formability, strength and heat resistance. However the bio plastic being introduced from March 2011 will consist of a minimum of 25% by weight of the polyactic based plastic and offers enhanced qualities in all these areas allowing it to be used in a range of elements from mechanical parts and exterior components.
For a range of OKI printer toner supplies, visit the Selectafont website.

Think before you Ink!
The next time you're feeling like getting 'inked' with a new tattoo, you might be getting just that!
A study in Germany carried out by the Chemical and Veterinarian Medicine Investigation office discovered samples of the tattoo ink it sampled contained dangerous compounds linked with cancer such as Carbon-black which is found in vehicle tyres and toner ink cartridges.
Further samples discovered dangerous substances which though not illegal are not intended for injection into Human skin.

Inkjet Printers inspire Scientists
The humble inkjet printer has inspired researchers at the Wake Forest Institute for regenerative Medicines to develop a skin printing system that they hope will one day help save lives on the battlefield.
Dr Anthony Atala a director of the institute said "We started out by taking a typical desktop inkjet cartridge. Instead of ink we use cells, which are placed in the cartridge."
Other universities are also experimenting with the technique which is being aimed at rebuilding skin for burns victims, by building fresh skin over damaged tissue. A small piece of healthy skin is taken chemically from the patient, seperated and then expanded in large quantities. Once the new skin cells are made they are then loaded into an adapted cartridge and printed onto the patient without actually coming into contact with them. The new cells mature forming healthy skin anywhere from a matter of minutes to a few hours depending on the area and severity of the burn.
The pioneering project is in pre-clinical trials and could take another five years before it reaches a stage where it can be used on patients. Burns injuries account for between 5% and 20% of those sustained on the battlefield, but it is hoped that the new printer will find a use in both military and civilian situations.

Lexmarks settles over Ink Cartridge Patents
Lexmark International has reached settlements with nearly half the number of companies it originally sued over alleged patent violations.
Cases were filed in August against a total of 24 companies with the U.S. International Trade Commision as well as a federal court in Ohio, for infringing Lexmark's patents concerning manufacture, import and sale of replacement toner cartridges for their laser printers.
The full terms of the settlements reached with 10 of the 24 companies weren't disclosed nor were the statuses of the remaining suits.
Manufacturers have been aggresive in following up alleged patent violations, with Epson leading the way, to discourage potential competitors in the cartridge market and protect lucrative sales.
The companies involved in the settlement are Alpha Image Tech, E-Toner Mart Inc, Nano Pacific Corp, Ninestar Image Co, Ninestar Image International Ltd, Ninestar Technology Co, Print-Rite Holdings Ltd, Seine Image International Co, Union Technology International (M.C.O.) Co and Ziprint Image Corp. and interestingly, despite the cases being brought about in the U.S. some of the companies involved are based in China.
Lexmark has said in a statement regarding the matter "While the Settling Parties did not admit any wrongdoing, they have confirmed their ongoing commitment to respect intellectual property rights by resolving the litigation amicably".
The companies have agreed as part of the settlement to a permanent injuntion and not to oppose Lexmark's ongoing efforts for the International Trade Commision to ban future imports of infringing cartridges.

"Toner-Gate" Australian MP's ruthless $300,000 spend
Its been labelled "Toner-Gate" and according to documents recently obtained through the Freedom of Information, Liberal MP's went on a three week spree spending nearly AUS$300,000 on office supplies in the run up to the Federal Election.
MP's were told in September that a strict cap on office consumables such as printer toner and paper was to come into force on the 1st October 2009, sparking the splurge. Previously federal MP's and Senators could spend unlimited amounts on office supplies.
The huge orders of toner cartridges sparked interest from the Finance Department and Joe Ludwig Special Minister of State, warning of "uncharacteristically large orders for office requisites in the lead up to the introduction of the yearly cap".
This comes to light at a time when many of our own MP's are coming under fire and facing the consequences of expenses scandals with details of expenses claims since the general election being published online.

Bursting Bubbles & Clever Crystals - How Inkjet Printers work
Inkjet printers were first mass produced in the 1980’s and since then have become one of the most affordable types of printer finding a place in almost every home and office but do you know how they actually work?
Inkjet printers fall under the category of non impact printers, since they spray ink directly onto the paper unlike dot matrix printers which use a series of small pins to strike an ink loaded ribbon (similar in principle to a typewriter).
Inkjet printer manufacturers use two different methods to transfer the ink onto the paper, one utilises heat and the other vibration.
In the thermal bubble or bubblejet printer, resistors create heat which creates a bubble within the ink. This expands pushing a small amount of ink out through the nozzle. When the bubble ‘pops’ the resulting vacuum draws ink back in from the cartridge.
The second method, which was patented by Epson, is Piezoelectric, so called because it uses Piezo crystals. A small electric current is passed into the crystal which makes it vibrate. As it vibrates inwards it pushes a small amount of ink out through the nozzle, when the crystal vibrates back outwards it pulls ink back in from the reservoir.
Some inkjet facts:
- The printer heads on bubble jet can contain between 300 and 600 nozzles
- The dots of ink are tiny – even smaller than the diameter of a human hair
- Most inkjet cartridges produced today have the printer head on the cartridge themselves rather than the printer.
Here at Selectafont we can offer ink cartridges compatible with most inkjet printers and are always happy to answer your printer or cartridge queries. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on our website, why not drop us an email at sales@selectafont.co.uk ?

Kodak cartridges are calling me...
With their advertising campaigns seemingly everywhere right now, Kodak appear to be the printer manufacturer of the moment.Reliability issues were a bit of a problem originally with the early models but now they’ve got production of a few printers under their belt and with the Gadget Show rating the ESP 3250 highly, customers are being drawn in by promises of cheaper replacement ink costs to give them a go.
They’ve certainly made life simple in that most printer models take the same Kodak 10 cartridge and keeping costs down by making the printer head part of the printer itself, not the cartridge it means you are only paying it for it once and not every time you need to replace the ink.
We stock the full range of Kodak ink cartridges and with our return customer discount we are very competitively priced – even compared to all the other big name suppliers.

CISS Machines
![]() |
| JRCISSCLI8 |
These are Continuous Ink Supply Systems and are a means of supplying a continuous flow of ink to the print heads via silicone supply tubes connected to an externally mounted reservoir. The cartridges remain in place in the printer and the inks are separated by colour in individual tanks within the reservoir allowing you to simply refill the ink colour you are running low on.
CISS machines best suit customers who do a lot of printing, but for those who do the savings can be impressive – up to 95% for inkjet printers.
We have just taken delivery of two new CISS machines, the JRCISSCLI8 for Canon printers and is suitable for use with any Canon which takes the PGI-5 and CLI-8 cartridges.
The second one is the JRCISSE79X which is compatible with any Epson printer which takes the T0791, T0792, T0793, T0794, T0795, T0796 range of cartridges.
In addition to these we also have machines that are compatible with the Epson T0711, T0712, T0713 and T0714 as well as the Canon PG-40 and CL-41 cartridges.
So if you print a lot and are looking into reducing the money you spend on replacement cartridges, consider a CISS machine.
If you have any queries about Continuous Ink Systems or just looking for ink cartridges compatible with your printer you can contact us at sales@selectafont.co.uk and we’ll talk you through the options.

Are compatible cartridges right for you?
With genuine cartridges costing in some cases almost the same price as the printer, many people are in for a nasty shock the first time they come to buying their first set of replacement cartridges. So compatibles seem a far more appealing option but there are a few things to consider. It’s all about expectations
Knowing what you want from a cartridge (or your printer) is the key to a happy relationship when it comes to using compatibles. Realistically there are going to be some minor differences between the print
quality of the genuine OEM cartridge vs. a basic non branded compatible.
If your main requirement from a cartridge are that text can be easily read and you print the occasional photo or picture and want it to be a good example of the original image then the economy compatibles are easily up to the job.
On the other hand if you print a lot of photos and are looking for a reasonable quality, then you might want to consider a branded compatible or remanufactured cartridge. A remanufactured cartridge is an OEM cartridge that has been used, professionally cleaned and then refilled using high quality ink and they are considered a ‘greener’ option, so a kinder on both pocket and the environment.
Here at Selectafont, we offer a range of compatibles and remanufactured cartridges for most printer models, from our lowest priced unbranded or economy to a high quality branded or remanufactured cartridge. Furthermore we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee with every compatible cartridge purchased because we source the highest quality cartridges we can even within our economy range, not just the cheapest we can find. So you don’t have to sacrifice quality with our compatible cartridges, it’s just about knowing what you want.
Best Sellers
Our best selling products speak for themselves – with our Epson T0715 set of 4 economy compatible cartridges for Epson printers which take the T0711, T0712, T0713 & T0714 cartridges, topping the list.
We’re happy to chat about all things cartridges so if you’re considering compatibles and not sure what you need, why not drop us an email at sales@selectafont.co.uk and we’ll talk you through the options for your printer.

Epson T0715 set of cleaning cartridges
If your printer clogs up easily or produces streaks far too often, then you probably have dried ink in your printers workings. These new cleaning cartridges we have made at Selectafont can solve these problems. Place the cartridges in any Epson printer that accepts T0711-T0714 cartridges, print a couple of pages of block primary colours, then replace with your original cartridges. Print a couple of test pages and you are good to go. It's so easy to do and can save you a lot of time and bother. Most people come across this problem when not cleaning their printer heads often enough. This can lead to blocked printer nozzles, they end up scrapping the cartridge and paying over the top for a Genuine cartridge which would not be necesary with these new cleaning cartridges.
